Description
One day, Sage Narada brought a divine fruit (sometimes a mango or a knowledge-fruit) to Shiva and Parvati, saying it must not be divided and should be given to only one of their sons — Ganesha or Kartikeya.
To decide who should receive it, Shiva proposed a challenge:
“Whoever circles the world three times and returns first shall have the fruit.”
Kartikeya, swift and proud, immediately mounted his peacock and soared off to fly around the globe.
Ganesha, portly and calm, thought for a moment — then walked around his parents three times and bowed.
When asked why, he said:
“My parents are the whole universe to me — by circling you, I have circled the world and beyond.”
Shiva and Parvati, moved by his wisdom and devotion, gave Ganesha the fruit.
